In nature, most offspring are produced then can survive, causing an overabundance or "struggle to survive" through out all the offspring. This happens in every population, there are a different variation of traits in each offspring that is produced.
Offspring with different variations make them more able to better adapt to their environment with and have a higher likely hood to survive in it.
The offspring that survive will end up mating with others who have other favourable traits that will be passed on to future generations, which is called Natural Selection.
